sakura packaging
Packaging Design, Photography
These are just a few examples of the packaging projects I undertook in my time as a designer for the automotive brand distribution company - Saxon Brands.
The process involved either designing the packaging from scratch based on nets from the supplier and existing packaging/brand guidelines, or updating existing packaging. I would start by contacting the manufacturer through our China office and seeing what assets they could provide in the form of images and nets. They would also send us a physical sample of the product so we could take our own in situ photos and make sure the packaging looks right in the mockup. It would also allow us to see whether we needed to design any labels/tags/stickers for additional info on the product.
I would then go through numerous iterations checking the position of all elements by creating 3D mockups and getting feedback from the product managers. What made this position unique was that the office connected to a vast warehouse containing thousands of Sakura products. So I could walk down and physically check my new packaging against similar products.
After approval I would send the packaging off to print and communicate with the printers to ensure accuracy. Sometimes we would receive samples to check before putting a large order through. This would allow me to check colours are within the necessary accuracy range and that senior management are happy.
The main challenge of these projects was ensuring the brand looked consistent on all shapes and sizes of packaging. The amount of information varied hugely so managing this correctly within the brand was crucial.
